Hematite Gem Stone

This stone brings to the wearer alertness, exuberance and, peculiarly enough, success in legal issues. This is not made up by me or some other source; it has been in our culture for quite long. And another thing that I have surely not made up, this stone is also known to increase the wearer’s sex drive.

Hematite is an iron oxide, much like rust, except that it has much more valuable properties. It is available in iron mines as a metallic opaque stone, and is one of the major ores of iron. However, the interesting characteristic is its luster. The stone in itself is pitch black or blue, but the brilliant shine it wears on its surface when polished can make it sometimes look like silver. It is still popularly used in art works for making hollow portraits which go by the name of intaglios. Hematite that can be readily polished and cut is available in Brazil, Canada, Venezuela and a few west European countries.

There is a brother of hematite, known as marcasite, that can often be seen in old belt buckles and costume jewelry (for which you would probably have to watch an old cowboy movie). It has a similar luster, but brassy colored instead of silver. Unfortunately, on most occasions, pyrite or fool’s gold, which is another ore of iron, is passed of as marcasite because of a similar luster.

These two stones have an overall fair amount of hardness. However, the surface can be easily subjected to abrasion. So this stone has limited wearability. But it’s a different kind of stone, for people with a different kind of taste.
