Coral Gem Stone
This is a stone that has a more than twenty centuries old reputation for curing madness, giving wisdom and calming storms. If there is ever a gemological hall of fame, the coral will be right up there at the top with all the diamonds, rubies, and emeralds.
Other kinds of folklore hail the red coral as a sign of devotion and attachment. Some even go on to claim that any coral will lose its color when a friend of the wearer is about to die. But for this to happen, the stone should not be cut, and should be worn in the natural form in which it is found!
Many geology textbooks term the coral as a sedimentary rock – one that is formed out of the accumulation of the skeletal calcium carbonate of colonies of sea creatures and subsequent hardening by pressure. That’s why the material is translucent or opaque. It occurs in a variety of colors, including white, pink, orange, red and black, and the natural structure of coral would look something like a tree.
Some of the most expensive varieties of corals are the angel-skin coral, which has a whitish field with a faint blush of pink, and the blood-coral which is a deep red variety. The best red corals are found in the Mediterranean Sea, the African coast and off Malaysia and Japan.
Because of the translucent nature, once again, the coral is cut in the cabochon style, and sometimes left uncut and used in the natural form, because of the believes. This stone is relatively soft and needs careful handling. Also, because of the chemical composition, exposure to acids can be detrimental. Also be especially careful while buying this stone, it can very easily be imitated with plastic or glass.
