Chrysoprase Gem Stone

This is a highly translucent variety of quartz that is mostly found in light and dark shades of green. The translucent characteristic means that the stone is normally cut in the cabochon style. It happens to be extremely bright and uniformly colored and prized for that reason. But nonetheless, it is quite inexpensive because of its abundance.

Still, that does not take anything away from the glamour and fascination that is associated with this stone. Because of its low cost, it is also quite useful as a fashion accessory. This stone is often confused with jade; it’s true that this stone is sometimes known as Australian jade, but that does not make it a variety of jade.

Another similar variety of quartz is the carnelian, which is believed to bring courage and enterprising nature to the wearer. This stone too has its share of glamour – if the chrysoprase was worn by Alexander the great in all his campaigns, the carnelian was worn by the likes of Napoleon and Prophet Muhammad. The carnelian is generally reddish orange to brownish orange in color and moderately hard. This stone, like its brother, is translucent or opaque and has a uniform color. It can very commonly be found in antique jewelry, carvings and engravings.

The best sources for chrysoprase today are Australia, Brazil and Poland, while carnelian is found most in India. So if you are looking for a stone with an extraordinary amount of warmth and beauty, a host of fascinating stories associated with it, at an inexpensive price then end your search right now - the carnelian is the best thing for you.
