Beryl Gem Stone

The beryl is a legend since medieval times. Most kings had a beryl on one of their fingers when going for war or negotiations – it was known to add intellect and presence of mind and remove laziness. The wearer was believed to become unconquerable and friendly and likeable at the same time (if the two are possible at the same time!).
Today beryls are prized for the extraordinary range of hues and shades they occur in and the awesome clarity they possess (except for emeralds which happen to belong to the beryl family as well). Other than this, the stones are extremely durable (with a high hardness again with the exception of emeralds) and have an excellent fiery brilliant look which gives them the attraction and appeal that they are so known for.

You first need to understand that the beryl is not one type of stones, but a broad family – the blue beryls are known as aquamarines and the green ones are known as emeralds. Other than this, there are also the pink ones (which go by the name of morganites) and the less known yellow or yellow-green variety known as golden beryls. The best golden beryls are found in Russia, Madagascar, Brazil and Namibia and the best kind of morganites have sources in Italy, Mozambique and Namibia. Because of their abundance, they are one of the best buys if you want long-lasting beauty at an affordable price.

There are also the lilac, salmon, orange and sea green shades as well as colorless varieties. These are really rare and not available in jewelry collections, but the orange shade is relatively more abundant and available at quite low prices. But beware of orange beryls that are heated to produce the pink color and sold as morganites. There is also the red hue – the rarest and most expensive of all, which is sometimes known as red emerald.
